Sources and corrections

All facts are adapted from the "Did you know…" archive on English Wikipedia (2004 to today). Each fact links to the Wikipedia article it is about. That article lists its sources and the volunteer editors who wrote it.

Licence

Wikipedia text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence. We have shortened and reworded the hooks into standalone sentences. The facts on this site are shared under the same licence. Wikipedia is a trademark of the Wikimedia Foundation, which does not endorse this site.

How we choose facts

We start with every archived hook, remove duplicates, and keep the ones that are self-contained and most likely to surprise a general reader. We leave out sensitive subjects, current politics, breaking news and hooks that describe something as "currently" or "new". The year shown beside each fact is the year Wikipedia featured it.

Facts can be wrong or out of date

Records get broken, scientific results are revised and some claims are later retracted. If you spot a fact that is wrong or no longer true, email hello@tidylookup.com with the fact's text and we will remove or fix it.
